The Daylight Color Match Test: Choosing Loc Extensions That Blend Naturally

Choosing the right loc extension color can be difficult when you are comparing product photos on a phone. Screen brightness, indoor lighting and camera settings can all change how a shade appears.

A daylight color match test gives you a more useful starting point before choosing human hair loc extensions.

What You Need

Prepare a small extension sample or a physical color ring, a plain white background and access to indirect daylight. If you are ordering online, take clear photos of your existing locs to share with the supplier.

Physical samples are more reliable than comparing two images on different screens.

Step 1: Check Your Roots, Mid-Lengths and Ends

Look at these three areas separately.

Your roots may appear darker than your ends, especially if your hair has been colored or exposed to sunlight. For an extension installation, pay particular attention to the area where the new hair will join your existing locs.

A shade that matches your roots perfectly may still create a visible change farther down the loc.

Step 2: Compare in Indirect Daylight

Place the sample beside your hair near a window, away from direct sunlight. Use a white background to make differences easier to see.

Compare both the depth and the undertone. Does the sample look equally dark? Does it appear warmer, cooler or more reddish than your hair?

Do not rely only on the color number. Shade names and numbering can vary between suppliers.

Step 3: Repeat Under Indoor Lighting

Check the same sample under your usual indoor lighting.

The aim is to find a blend you like in everyday settings. If one shade works near a window but looks noticeably different indoors, compare another sample before deciding.

Step 4: Choose a Close Match or an Intentional Contrast

For a subtle result, choose the closest physical match around the attachment area.

For an ombre look, consider where you want the darker color to transition into the lighter shade. Share an inspiration photo and confirm the color sequence before ordering.
