The Sample-to-Style Test: How to Estimate Bulk Hair for Loc Making

Buying bulk hair for loc making is easier when you know how much hair your chosen technique uses.

A sample-to-style test helps you estimate the quantity for a specific project. It is especially useful when a salon is trying a new length, diameter or construction method.

This method applies to loose bulk hair used to make or extend locs. Ready-made loc extensions are usually planned by strand count instead.

Step 1: Define the Finished Loc

Before testing, agree on the desired length, approximate diameter and construction method.

Decide whether the bulk hair will form the entire extension or only part of it. A small repair and a full extension require different quantities.

Keep these details consistent across the samples.

Step 2: Weigh the Hair Before Starting

Use a scale suitable for measuring small hair quantities.

Remove packaging, bands and ties. Weigh the dry hair you plan to use and record the starting weight.

Keep unused offcuts separate so that your calculation reflects the amount allocated to the project.

Step 3: Make Several Samples

Ask your loctician to create several sample locs using the intended technique.

Compare their length, diameter and overall appearance. If they do not match the target style, adjust the samples before estimating a full order.

One sample may not represent the whole project, so use an average from several consistent samples.

Step 4: Calculate the Average

Divide the amount of hair used by the number of sample locs.

For example:

  • Hair used for five sample locs: 10g
  • Average hair used per loc: 10g ÷ 5 = 2g
  • Planned quantity: 80 locs
  • Estimated base requirement: 80 × 2g = 160g

These figures demonstrate the calculation only. They are not a standard requirement for CAVORA hair or a particular loc size.

Step 5: Add a Project-Specific Allowance

Discuss additional hair for trimming, variation between sections and adjustments during installation.

Your loctician should decide the allowance based on the samples and the actual project. Longer or thicker sections may require a different amount.

Round the final estimate up to the available package sizes.

Keep a Record for Future Orders

Save the product name, color, length, sample weight and finished loc measurements. This gives your salon a useful reference when recreating a similar style.

For a CAVORA HAIR bulk hair inquiry, share your sample findings, total estimated weight and delivery country so our team can help you plan the order.
